Breeding pairs of the distinctive orange and black billed seabird can be found in tidewaters and sheltered bays all over Long Island. They nest on the ground on open sandy beach and sandbars. White faced with black crown, back and wing with short legs, they glide long-winged low over the water beak agape skimming the water for fish as it flies.
