Identified by its black crown and white forehead in spring and summer, the smallest of the American terns roosts in large breeding colonies near piping plovers on open beaches. The nesting areas of threatened and endangered migratory waterbird are fenced off in an attempt to protect them. They are can be seen diving for small fish.
